nique experiences on ice become reality on Weissensee in Carinthia. 6.5 km² in area, Weissensee is the biggest continuously frozen and maintained natural ice rink in Europe. From mid-December until the beginning of March, you won’t only encounter skaters on the as much as 40 cm-thick sheet of ice: horse-drawn sleighs and winter hikers also take full advantage of this truly unique setting. The ice supervisor and his team look after as much as 25 km of skating tracks, ice-stock lanes and ice-hockey rinks, along with a 400-meter track for speed skaters.
Weissensee – Europe’s biggest natural ice rink
Thanks to a calendar of international events revolving around the ice, Weissensee has made a name for itself far beyond the country’s borders. For example, at the end of January around 5,000 guests arrive, including some of the world’s best marathon speed skaters, in order to show off their skills speed skating over 50, 100 and 200 km as part of the “Alternative Dutch 11-City Tour”.
